Lesson 3 Science creation and evolution
This work will enable you to think about the question above. Have paper and pens ready to work and set yourself up to use some online films. You will be learning from a range of viewpoints and you need to be able to express your own and other people’s views clearly, and to argue and give reasons for what you think. There are some right answers, but some of this work is about deep disagreements.
First, make a note of these 5 keywords. If you don’t know their meanings yet, then you soon will do. Evolution / Creation / Big Bang / Designer / Origins

An A-Z of Religion and Belief Get ready to watch: two clips from the BBC series ‘An A-Z of Religion and Belief’, each clip is less than 3 minutes. When you have seen it, summarise what the clip said in just 4 sentences. The first clip is called: ‘C is for Creation.’

Your task – to do an extended piece of writing answering this question.
- You must use paragraphs and take care with spelling, punctuation and grammar.
- You must not use bullet points, subheadings or pictures.
- Below is a suggested outline to help you complete the essay.
- You must read the level criteria and state which level you are aiming for at the beginning and how you hope to achieve that and at the end write what you think you achieved and why. Your target level should be one sub-level higher than your last assessment.
- You must look back to your Assessment sheet stuck in your book and read the HTI comment and aim to do this in your assessment.
Structure:
Introduction –
- Give a basic introduction to the importance of the question and whose answers you are going to write about.
Knowledge and Understanding –
Outline in detail how they answer the title question with full explanation.
- Genesis 1 and 2 – with the different interpretations.
- Other cultural or religious stories (two or three examples is enough)
- Philosophical responses – design, purpose, suffering
- Scientific theories – the Big Bang and Evolution
- An explanation of how some are religious and Scientists.
Conclusion – evaluation of each answer and your viewpoint
Explain how each of the above is successful or not in your view.
