Eschatology refers to beliefs about the 'last things' ie death, judgement, heaven and hell.Â
The belief in life after death is central to Christianity. Christians believe that Jesus rose from the dead three days after he was crucified. Paul (apostle and author of many New Testament books) stressed the importance of this belief in 1 Corinthians 15 v16.
The Apostles Creed and Nicene Creed state the beliefs in the afterlife.
John's gospel (the eschatological gospel) has many references to the afterlife. In one account Lazarus is raised from the dead
Judgement
Christians believe there will be a Judgement Day when people will be judged by God for the quality of their lives.
They believe that on this day Jesus will return to earth in a 'second coming'. This will mark the end of human existence on the earth. This belief is known as the 'Parousia'.
Jesus will separate those who will go to hell, just as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats.
